Full video on Glazier Drive: From Read to Roof: Progressive Blocking Drills That Build Elite Defensive Systems
OVERVIEW
This segment covers individual and mirror-based training drills for volleyball players, with a focus on middle blockers. The coach emphasizes self-assessment and immediate feedback as key drivers of faster improvement.
SOLO AND MIRROR DRILLS
Players practice blocking against a wall, which gives them immediate, self-directed feedback on hand positioning and arm explosion. Footwork in front of a mirror helps athletes identify leaning and balance issues on their own. Solo jumping and reach drills are used to maximize vertical reach, including hula hoop exercises and a rubber band stretched across the net pins to train both serving and blocking reach simultaneously.
TIP DRILL
This drill trains middles to read the ball coming off the net after a block and transition quickly back into an attacking position. The coach varies his swings — hitting down, hitting a rainbow, tipping — forcing the player to read and react, stay square, and keep her hands ready. The emphasis is on not getting hyperfocused on the ball at the expense of staying open to attack.
RED HANDS DRILL
Using foam “red hands,” players work on hand placement accuracy relative to the ball, keeping their core behind the ball and avoiding leaning or reaching. The drill can be progressed by having a live hitter replace the coach.
STOP-DROP DRILL
A three-part reaction drill where the player blocks a thrown ball, digs a ball thrown under the net, and then transitions to receive a libero toss for an attack. The goal is to build speed, reaction time, and the ability to transition fluidly from defense back to hitting as the season progresses.
